Cub Scout Pack 21

Cub Scout Pack 1890

Pinewood Derby Guidelines

General Pinewood Derby Guidelines for Den and Pack Level Divisions:

x  Boys must be registered Cub Scouts or Webelos at the time of the pack level race.

x  The Official BSA Grand Prix Kit shall be used. All others will be disqualified.

x  Only this year’s car can be used in the scout division races.

x  Overall dimensions: width shall not exceed 2-3/4”, length shall not exceed 7”, height shall not exceed 3”, weight shall not exceed 5 oz., and clearance between track and car must be 3/8”.

x  No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.

x  The car may be hollowed out, and/or built up, to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal, providing it is securely built into or adhered to the car body.

x  The scales on the day of the race are the final authority.

x  Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited. BSA axle guards are permitted.

x  Details such as steering wheel, driver, and decals are permissible as long as these do not exceed width, length, and weight specifications.

x  The car shall not use any kind of springs.

x  The car shall be free wheeling with no starting devices.

x  Only the wheels and axles that come with the kit are permissible. Wheels will not be shaped in any way. This means the wheels must sit flat on the track. Only the burrs may be sanded off to smooth the wheel.

x  Only graphite, Teflon, or other official BSA lubricant will be permitted. Participants may lubricate the vehicle prior to each division race. All lubrication must be done at the repair table.

x  Each car will be inspected by the inspectors before it may race. The inspectors have the right and responsibility to make qualifying decisions. Once the car has been inspected, it is impounded, and no changes may be made. If a car is disqualified, the racer will be given until the time check-in closes to make the changes necessary for their car to qualify.

x  If a car jumps the track, the judges will determine the cause. If it is the track, it will be repaired; if it is the car, the builder will have five minutes to make repairs, and the race will be rerun. If the car continues to jump the track, it will be disqualified.
